Community Rug

The Knitting and Needlework Group, which meets the first and third Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m., has adopted a project to benefit the Library Construction Fund.

The goal is to have community members gather in the conference room starting on Wednesday, Sept. 1 and 15, and continuing in October and beyond until the rug is finished. The rug is an opportunity for artisans to join in as well as have fun sharing ideas and conversation. See poster just inside the front entrance for the progress to date.

Book Discussion

The Book Discussion group shared their experience of a light, summer read “Something Missing” by Matthew Dicks (DIC). They looked at the life of Matthew Dicks- married, degrees in English and Educational Technology, having had dramatic experiences, e.g. died twice before the age of 18, being revived by paramedics both times, and how various aspects are autobiographical in his work.

Dicks’ gift lies in his ability to take superficially eccentric people and use their peculiarities to make them lovable human beings. His second title, “Unexpectedly, Milo” (On Order) is being released this month, and he’s busy working on a third.

Grasping History

“A People’s History of the United States” by Howard Zinn (973 ZIN) gets looked at often, not necessarily being read from cover to cover but searched for a comment on particular events of history. It first appeared in 1980 and has spawned various spin-offs.

If you haven’t looked at, consider also reading “Howard Zinn on History” (901 ZIN).

As we approach the 100th anniversary of WWI, just as the last traces of that conflict are lost to living memory, there are works offering timely insights on the experiences of the war’s causalities, actual and spiritual. Among them, consider “The Remains of Company D” (On Order) and “14-18: understanding the Great War” (940.3 AUD).
