The Desire to Read

It came as no surprise that Barnes & Noble put itself up for sale. Anyone looking at its profit earning charts in the past few years could wonder what change might be needed. One cannot draw any quick conclusions though, as the giant may find a buyer who adopts aggressive new strategies and survives.

It wasn’t so long ago that the megastores drove the small ma & pa and independent bookstores out of business. Might this be an opportunity for a transition in how the aisles of titles will be available? I like something Sven Birkerts (“The Gutenberg Elegies”) said, “As much as the books I read, they fired in me the desire to read-creating an electric sense of ‘midst’ that no one book in the hand ever could by itself-and then, to write, the fantasy being that I might someday become part of that force field. That my words, stored between covers, would add to that particular sense of potentiality that I have only ever encountered in the physical spaces of bookstores.”

Westlake

Donald E. Westlake, an American writer with over a hundred novels and non-fiction books to his credit, specialized in crime fiction, especially comic capers. His first private-eye novel “Kinds of Love” (M WES) continues to attract readers. If you pointed to a book that brought out his best, you’d likely mention his character, John Archibald Dortmunder, a professional crook whose plans are brilliant in conception. His last Dortmunder title, “Get Real” (M WES) was published in 2009.

If you’re not into series such as the Dormunder series, consider his stand-alone such as “Trust Me on This” (M WES). Crime fiction readers will certainly want to digest his two novels where he explored the extraordinary circumstances that make ordinary people commit murder, “The Ax” (M WES) and “The Hook” (WES).

While certainly not the only writer of comic mysteries, Westlake occupies a place as being of the best.
