Being Green: living lighter presentation Thursday, July 15, at 10:30 a.m.

John Kiseda, Lee County Environmental Program Coordinator, will share easy ways to be “green” without paying more for products & services. Pre-register.

Increased Interest

We have been glad that the Knitting Group, which meets the first and third Wednesday of each month, is seeing renewed and growing interest. To accommodate the wide range of artisans, the group will focus on knitting and needlework. Feel invited to join them at 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. these two Wednesdays of each month. You’ll notice as much talking is done as knitting and needlework but that’s part of the fun of the gathering.

Upcoming Activity

If you’re among those who have gathered shells, driftwood and other sea life and would like to incorporate it in some creation, consider coming to the class on Thursday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m., sponsored by the Sanibel Shell Crafters. This group meets weekly to create items from shells: flowers, flower arrangements, mirrors, shadow boxes, trees, holiday ornaments and lots of little shell items.

They will share the various techniques and skills needed to make shell flowers from the shells and sea life you find on our beach. Supplies will be provided and you’ll go home with one creation. Pre-register and $3.00 materials fee.

Artist of the Month

Divorce, foreclosure, spending time in jail for failure to respond to an injunction, and dramatic changes in his life are what brought our Artist of the Month to painting. This month’s exhibit includes his favorite Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, as well as drawings done with pen or charcoal.

Danny Brauer, the homeless painter, will share these paintings and drawings until the end of this month.

Figurines

The Senior Zone display features painted figurines this July. Gary Plache, a handyman by trade, experienced debilitating arthritis in his legs and this situation brought him to seek an activity that included a fair amount of opportunity to sit on the job. He finds that painting figurines provides just that occasion.

Exhibits

The case at the top of the stairs centers on antique car coins. You’ll be sure to see names of older cars once famous or that have a special place in the hearts of automobile enthusiasts. The coins, from the collection of Harold Hoban, concentrate on the early cars from 1901 to 1925.

Construction

I am spending hours each day on construction details. We have the Construction Documents 75 percent completed and remain on schedule for our fall ground-breaking.

Library Hours

Don’t remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
