Artist of the Month
Pete Slebioda, our artist for June, unveils personal doorways into the realms of possibility. He gives meaning to Stella Adler’s “Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.” What is also interesting about Pete’s paintings is that he is frank in attributing the value of art in his own life search. “Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his picture” Henry Ward Beecher said, and Pete gives credence to that experience.
Pete’s journey has led him to explore Native American spirituality and one finds hints of it in many of his works. In the current exhibition are works clearly Beach related and others from his travels in the southeast and eastern seaboard.
One large 4 foot by 6 foot piece, done in charcoal and then glazed over in oils, is entitled “Ghost of a Ravaged War.”The painting, to use Pete’s words, pertains to all wars and the suffering and pain that war creates. Evident in the painting is a pair of tears made of blood by each cartoon or figure in the painting. What these tears pertain to will take close scrutiny by the viewer.
More Dolls
Beach resident Wilda Gastelu shares with us in the Senior Zone display case a variety of dolls from around the world. While dolls have traditionally been a part of most children’s growing up years, these examples on display are collected by adults for their nostalgic value, beauty and historical importance. Suffice it to say, you can ponder on each doll for an extended time to notice all the fine features.
Exhibits
Enjoy two exhibits provided courtesy of Jacob Nenninger, age 11. In the case at the top of the stairs on the second floor are “Recycled Treasurers.” The recycled creations consist of either sports figures or animals made from cardboard boxes, playing cards or whatever material was handy at the moment of inspiration.
The second display, on first floor to the right of the large screen, revolves around a science project: Does design affect how a paper airplane flies? The display provides the steps of the project along with results and analysis of the data. There is also a digital frame showing the airplane in flight or not, depending on design.
