Who Gets Into Your Head?

What we read becomes a part of who we are-each book, article, and person we come to know in a novel or non-fiction work becomes a tiny thread in our tapestry of thought. Near the front entrance you’ll notice a new shelving unit and on it appears titles from our Classics Collection. These works stood the test of time and are usually considered to be a representation of the period in which it was written; and the work merits lasting recognition.

These classics touch us to our very core because they integrate themes that are understood by readers from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of experience. They also express some artistic quality-an expression of life, truth and beauty.

Now and then a person carries on like an expert and it turns out that he or she has read a short snippet on the Internet or a single book on a region, event or one sole novel by an author who has written eleven. Becoming a knowledgeable and responsible reader involves seeking out different perspectives and reading experiences.

Suggestion: Pick up one of the classic titles each quarter and think about what it is that the text is trying to inspire you to do, feel, or think.

Construction

You may have noticed the drilling rigs on our property this past week. The geologists were doing borings to determine how far down and how strong the foundation needs to be. That is a sign we are getting close to starting the blueprints needed for construction.

The structural engineers need to evaluate the samples of the soil obtained. They went down 25 feet (in two areas down 35 feet). The civil engineering plan also needed to know more areas on the library grounds so double-ring infiltration tests and additional standard penetration test borings were done in retention areas and in parking lot areas.

Friends

Consider joining The Friends of the Library. Application available in the library or request one via mailto:Beachfriends@comcast.net or Beachfriends@comcast.net and one will be forwarded.

Landscaping

The Landscape Committee met in recent weeks to put final touches on the overall landscaping plan for the grounds with the library expansion. We are convinced you will find the landscape look both appealing and inviting.

We still need two volunteers who could spend about four hours over a period of one to three days (whatever time schedule works in your schedule) in thinning out an area of landscaping. It involves pulling and pruning. Please feel free to stop at the library and talk with me.

Library Hours

Don’t remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 to 8, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. We look forward to seeing you.
