Artist of the Month
Paintings on display in the Conference Room this month include works from students at Cypress Lake School of the Arts and Cypress Lake High School. There’s wide diversity from the blend of students sharing their art.
Works are from Myrfargane Raymond, Tabia Lees, Elizabeth Sarah Rice, Karissa Parker, Jordan Alejandro, Miko Larraga, Brittaney English, Chanel Fryer, Tamara Coronel, Niko Takaki, and Annica Raye Colbert. In addition to the variety of talent evident in the exhibition overall, there are also interesting plans of each student as to the future.
Parking Lot
Parts of the parking lot will be closed on Saturday, May 8, for an Eagle Scout Project. After 1 p.m., the entire lot will be closed to entry. If you stop to return titles in the materials drop, please be aware that you’ll need to walk to the book drop slot and won’t be able to park near the front entry.
We’re excited at this project, under the planning and direction of Eagle Scout, Wiley Corning. Currently under construction and being installed that day are another bike rack, a message center, a landscape trellis, and a landscape pergola. It’ll be a wonderful addition.
Dedicated
The State Legislature is coming to terms with our state budget. One librarian, Paul Clark, 39, of Tallahassee, a systems librarian for the Wilderness Coast Public Libraries, making $43K a year and married with three sons, ages 9, 10 and 12, has been a fixture at the Capitol.
He requested vacation days and over the past six weeks, has spent 17 days in Tallahassee, holding up two or three signs, logging 12-hour shifts. He would just stand quietly hoping that state lawmakers would recognize the value of public libraries.
Clark is tall and soft-spoken. His wife describes him as stubborn but he corrects her noting he’s passionate.
Many of the legislatures came to expect to see Clark. Representative Alexander described him as “a librarian who cares, who been standing there, quietly reminding us how important this issue isWhen you see an individual citizen, taking his own time to be heard, that makes an impression.”
We are grateful for librarians like Clark. While funding is still at the same level as in 2001, it does give testimony how hard we are trying as a profession to spend taxdollars wisely and stretch these dollars doing more with less.
Library Hours
When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, which would be mentioned on the recorder, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
