Carrie Hill will offer hands-on directions to make a piece of jewelry in the class on Nov. 12. Pre-register and $10 materials fee. Recent classes have come away with jewelry they’ve been proud of, so one can usually finish the creation in the class.

Writing class meets Nov. 12 under the guidance of Corinne Thwing. Sharing writing ideas and possibilities is made possible. Those who participated in earlier classes and new or aspiring writers are welcome.

The Book Discussion group uses Nov.17 as the time to get into “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows (FIC SHA). Set in both London and Guernsey Island in the 1940’s, the story is sure to help you linger in its pages. If you’re searching for a novel where the characters are real and where you’ll smile from time to time, pick up this work. Available in regular and large print and on audio.

Dog Day is scheduled for Nov. 19, 4-5 p.m.

Artist of the Month

Kay Cowan shares her paintings this month. In the Conference Room you can delight in her use of oil as she captures both the close intimate and wider view of a subject. Kay migrates between Minnesota and Florida and you’ll notice this in her choice of subjects.

Enjoy her use of color, no color overpowers another and they still make a statement.

Containers/Pots for Bonsai

When it comes to bonsai, it’s not just the plant but the choice of container that makes the bonsai appealing to the viewer. This pot or container is also important to the overall look and feel of the tree.

We are delighted that Peter Shawinsky is sharing part of his container/pot collection with us. On display through the end of this month, one can see cascade, hand-painted, thimble, accent and shohin pots.

It is interesting that the container is as important as the tree in a bonsai design. Usually growers select the pot after styling the tree, so that the two harmonize in shape, size, texture, and color. While the purpose of the container is, of course, to provide a growth place for the tree’s needs, it also compliments the tree’s branch structure and seasonal or year-round colors. Try to visualize the different bonsai that might be placed in the different pots on display.

Writing

We appreciate the wealth of ideas shared via writing. Of no surprise, I’m sure, is the fact that we spend a lot of time trying to share the precious moments and insightful experiences made possible via reading.

Author Anne Rice offers this thought “If you want to be a writer, write. Write and write and write. If you stop, start againIgnore critics. Critics are a dime a dozen. Anybody can be a critic. Writers are priceless. Go where the pleasure is in your writing. Go where the pain is. Write the book you would like to read. Write the book you have been trying to find but have not found. But write.”

Anne continues “Every writer knows fear and discouragement. Just write-The world is crying for new writing. It is crying for fresh and original voices, and new characters and new stories. If you won’t write the classics of tomorrow, well, we will not have any.”

Classics

We have a good start on our Classics Collection. Look for it on shelves near the bay window on the first floor between Fiction and Mystery.

I mentioned Anne Rice above and she talked about re-reading two books that are her favorites. Both have been “very, very inspiring to her,” to use her words. They are “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Bronte (CL BRO) and “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte (CL BRO). The Bronte sisters lived in the 1800’s in the lonely parts of the Moores of Yorkshire in England. They wrote two seminal and important books for those who write from the imagination. At first glance these titles may not be as easy to read as you might like, but they are worth it.

For those who have already read these titles, consider spending time with “Readings on Wuthering Heights” (823.8 REA) or “Readings on Jane Eyre” (823.8 REA).

Phone

When you call during open hours, we answer the phone in person. There is no menu as long as when you call the phone company. Nor will a recorded voice go on for a half a minute, telling you what button to push for every option but the one you want. As we get busier in the season, we may need to put you on hold a bit. Hopefully you’ll see that we’re back shortly and we appreciate your patience.

Library Hours

Don’t remember library hours? Call for information. When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, which would be mentioned on the recorder, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
