Activity Details
The week of activities is interesting. Preschoolers can enjoy reading and crafts on Nov. 4 with emphasis on the love of reading, a priceless gift that lasts forever.
Knitters gather on Nov. 4 and, as always, those starting a project or those who’ve wanted to get started are welcome.
Licensed Physical Therapist Angela Mencarelli will be here on Nov. 5, offering help to identify possible reasons for falls and how to help prevent falls from occurring. This is a subject probably wise for all to consider as common sense tips and ideas can go a long way to helping unnecessary falls, balance conditions, and other related conditions. She has 12 years experience in treating geriatric conditions, so that adds to the presentation. There is no cost to attend.
Another inviting addition to our week’s activities is artist and Beach resident Robert Rigaux demonstrating his creative process in preparing a painting. What is appealing is Robert’s willingness to open the process to discussion and appreciation. I add “appreciation” here readily as when one becomes aware of what goes into the creation of an art work, one’s grasp and understanding is widened.
Nov. 10 marks the start of writer’s sharing sessions. Corinne Thwing facilitates these sessions and it’s been a wonderful opportunity to share writing ideas and possibilities. The regulars are glad the sessions are resuming. New or eager writers are welcome.
Upcoming Activities
Another Writer’s Sharing Session is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
A Jewelry Making class coordinated by Carrie Hill meets Thursday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 a.m. The class meeting last week sure had fun and one has to marvel at the creations. This class will offer hands-on directions to make a piece of jewelry, with type chosen by each person. See the poster on the entrance Conference Room Bulletin Board postings to see examples of possibilities. Pre-registration and $10 materials fee are needed.
Woodman
Author Richard Woodman, an ex-sailor writing in the tradition of C.S. Forester (well known for the Horatio Hornblower series and as a novelist who rose to fame on tales of adventure and military crusades), brings history to life in a long series called The Nathaniel Drinkwater collection. In this Woodman series, the main character is Nathaniel Drinkwater, a fictional sailor who is an officer in the Naval Army during the Napoleonic Wars.
We would like to add this series of 14 books to our collection as the sailor/sea/adventure/military affairs fits the interest of many readers. If you’d consider a gift of $250 to the library we can add the entire series.
Usage
We’ve stayed busy this summer as we had an increase in the number of people using the library as well as a hike in the number of items checked out from the library. The figures were consistent in June-July-August-September and come at no surprise to those of us who see traffic flow every day. For example, last month the number of people was up 10 eprcent and number of items circulating was up 28 percent.
It is this increased demand that prompted our review of whether to expand the current library facility and services a few years ago, and with the decision made to expand, is reinforced frequently. Do know that with the economical downturn, we delayed the expansion project for the past two years but are gearing plans to move forward with expansion soon.
We have been waiting for a loan for the final portion of funds needed and while we heard a litany of “we don’t have funds to loan” from banks the past two years, we have now gotten good news that a loan will be forthcoming and this time it’s not just a hope but a reality. The loan will be tax-exempt and enable us to build it into our debt service.
The next time you’re in the library, stop in front of the model of the library and let yourself dream a bit. The model you’re looking at will soon be in concrete planning stages. More details will be known and shared in December. Meanwhile, if you can participate in a donation/gift to the Library Construction Fund, that would be most welcome. We’ll use the funds wisely.
Landscaping
Now that the weather is less humid and if your schedule and energy allow, we’d welcome your spending a few hours one day in the coming weeks pulling weeds in a section of our landscaping. The sooner it’s done the better as the weeks won’t grow to full maturity and the ground is still moist, allowing them to be pulled more easily.
This is a short project. Please ask for me when you come in the library and we’ll choose a section you can concentrate on. Thanks.
Library Hours
Don’t remember library hours? Call for information. When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, which would be mentioned on the recorder, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
