Upcoming Activities

Spend an evening at the movies by enjoying the classic film “The Thin Man.” Completed in 1934 and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, the screenplay was based on the novel “The Thin Man” by Dashiell Hammett, and discussed by the Book Club last week. In 1997, the film was added to the National Film Registry having been deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The film starts at 6 p.m. on Sept. 23.

Jewelry Making class is scheduled for Thursday, September 24, at 1:30 p.m. The class will offer hands-on directions to make a piece of jewelry, with type of jewelry chosen by each participant. See the poster for samples of earlier earrings, anklets, or bracelets. Pre-register and $10 materials fee.

Library Is Busy

The 21st century library has arrived. While loaning out materials and providing reference remains important, a growing number of people are recognizing the many resources available from Conference Room presentations and seminars to Internet Searching. We see it in our summer usage. I’ve previously mentioned increased usage of people in the library during both June and July and accompanying spike in materials checked out, but the trend continues. In August, library usage was up 12 percent in terms of people physically in the library using resources, and number of items checked out was up 23%.

Writing

If you’re looking for an easy Beach read, or a title that you can read from cover to cover and have a feeling of having spent your time well, consider the fiction “And My Shoes Keep Walking Back to You” (GOL) by Kathi Kamen Goldmark. It’s her debut novel and as a writer she connects often with Dave Barry, Molly Ivins and Carl Hiassen. Her playful humor and smooth prose style are likely what keep readers finding it a quick read. This fall she joins Sam Barry in writing a book on writing.

One reason I’ve mentioned Kathi is a comment she makes about writing: “People in publishing are desperate for good ideas-that is, timely ideas, fully realized and well executedA writer’s job begins with having an original idea that is of interest to enough people to warrant its publication or production, and this is no small feat in itself. Then it falls to the writer to compose an intriguing presentation that will pass muster with the toughest critics in the world: Elvis impersonators! No, actually we mean the people who work in publishing and the movie industry. Why are they tough? They have to be in order to stay competitive. Many writers don’t understand how to present their work properly. Some slam out half-baked ideas; others labor over their projects for years without getting objective feedback.”

Conference Room Offerings

If a presentation, tutorial or seminar mentions “pre-registration necessary,” please sign up as soon as you can, and definitely don’t wait until the same day of the offering to sign up. Some presenters need time to prepare handouts for those signed up, and it also gives us time to make arrangements where needed.

New

On titles found in the Display Collections and on shelves featuring new titles, you’ll find a sticker labeled NEW. In the center of the book of the NEW sticker, there is a number. That number indicates the month of the year the title was added to our collection, e.g. an 8 means it was added in August of this year.

Carpeting

Over Labor Day weekend, the carpets throughout the library were cleaned. Some areas had so much sand that they were cleaned twice. The carpet is worn in many areas, and that’s no surprise considering the number of steps these areas have experienced.

What is helpful for those who have sand on their shoes or sandals is to wipe your feet on the carpet outside the front entrance, and again or forsure on the green carpet just inside the door. Doing this aids in less wear and tear on the carpeting, and also avoids the buildup of sand. Your extra effort in this regard is appreciated.

Library Hours

Don’t remember library hours? Call for information. When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, which would be mentioned on the recorder, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 9 to 1 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
