As I sat it traffic heading north on Estero Boulevard Friday afternoon around 4 p.m. my mind began to wander. Not moving for a true 5 minutes I thought about the gas consumption of all the cars, trucks and trollies. I shut my engine off, with the windows down, and called out a hello to my friends walking to the beach. On my way to dinner at The American Legion Post on Buttonwood Dr. only 4 miles from my home took 1 hour 15 minutes. Knowing the traffic will never change in intensity even upon completion of construction, I started thinking about the waste of fuel and how far one could travel in that time trying to get off the beach. If I was heading on route 75 Alligator Alley heading to Miami at 75 mph I would be 93 miles down the road. Let’s now add all the 200-plus vehicles on Estero Blvd. from the base of the sky bridge to Publix, into the equation and the total increases 18,750 miles. This figure is for the time I was in traffic; what about the rest of the day? That 18,750 miles could be could be translated into 120 trips to Miami which is 157 miles away. It is an unsolvable problem, so don’t get mad at anyone, it’s the price of being in paradise.
