Set a good example and save some money for a rainy day

To the editor:

We are hearing much about the federal government shutdown, and how some federal employees are not able to buy food since they didn’t get a paycheck. This is such a sad commentary regarding our society. Mature adult human beings who are employed and making money are telling us they are living hand to mouth, not able to control their expenditures and live within their means and save money on a regular and continuous basis. Why should such individuals receive any sympathy? If they don’t have the strength of character to save finances for unexpected events, should they not suffer the consequences of their bad choices?

Likewise, those federal employees who did not show up for work should not be paid! Why didn’t they show up and do their work with the expectation that they would be paid when the government shutdown was over? After all, that is what Congress is considering, to pay “back wages,” but in many situations it is for work that was never done, or at least not on time! If these federal employees like national park attendants had continued on working, would they not have negated the President’s intent? Isn’t it interesting to think that most government operations could have continued?

So will you set the example of good financial management by spending less than you earn and save some money for a rainy day?
