Misuse of social media

To the editor:

The rising misuse and abuse of the “social media” have become high-level threats to Truth, Social Justice, Freedom and indeed even to Life itself.

Ref: Recent confrontation of Catholic students with Native Americans.

Any sort of scheme at all whereby enormous numbers – tens of millions – of people can be connected instantly and simultaneously with an intentionally dangerous lie – without ANY restraints whatsoever – constitutes a threat to all people, even to the liars, in both the long-term and the short-term. The misuse of the social media is analogous to the generally recognized crime of shouting “fire” in a crowded movie theater!!!

These media serve no defensible purpose in the light of their increasingly frequent, non-regulated, politicized and profound misuse: They simply make money for their owners at potentially disastrous physical and monetary costs to innocent individuals and to the public everywhere – not just in the USA.

The social media must either set up the means to exercise complete and effective control over their content, surrender that responsibility to non-political regulators or cease to operate, period – now!!!
