Looking forward to community input

To the editor:

When I first came to Fort Myers Beach, I like a lot of you fell in love with this beautiful island. A community that opened its welcoming arms to a stranger and I knew I found a home. This vibrant, eclectic community where neighbors truly cared for neighbors and where exchanges of ideas and opinions made for stimulating conversations inspiring me to be an active contributor. I took pride in saying I was from Fort Myers Beach, and put my words into actions; I was appointed by the Town Council to Bay Oaks Recreational Campus Advisory Board (BORCAB) and became a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador actively volunteering for events that enriched our sense of community. Whether playing Santa Claus at the elementary school or cleaning debris for those in need after Irma I treasured opportunities to help my community, I found my purpose.

The last several months have been trying for me, I’ve witnessed a change to our community’s personality, an economic crisis from red tide and a road construction project that seemingly will never end. Where we once engaged in open exchange of ideas we’ve stopped listening, we take sides instead of coming together as a community. I believe the collective is better than the parochial. We need to come together again, to think as many and act as one.

It is for this reason, that I am announcing my candidacy for Fort Myers Beach Town Council. I seek your support in helping me become your voice when moving forward as a community built on the ideas of the many, and succeeding through the efforts of the united.

My name is Dan Allers, over the next several weeks I hope to meet you, hear your ideas and carry your messages across the neighborhoods of our cherished island.
