Residents question fire chief job search
To the editor:
The recent decision of our Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District Board of Fire Commissioners to conduct a national job search for our Fire Chief position was astounding to us.
We are CERT members, and since CERT is actually under the direction of the Fire Department, we have had the opportunity to work with Chief White often. We have found him to be competent, personable and extremely helpful in our training. He often attends our monthly meetings to show his commitment to our group and bolster our endeavors to be of service to our community.
Since Darren has never even received an evaluation, it is puzzling that a national search is now taking place. We particularly applaud the new board member who has insisted on an evaluation. Shouldn’t that be done before Darren is effectively pushed out of a job for reasons which are unclear at best?
We fully support Fire Chief Darren White. It is our hope that his leadership will continue.
