To the editor:

How much shrimp can you eat in three minutes??

Join the newest addition to Fort Myers Beach’s world-famous annual event, the inaugural Beach Lions Shrimp Festival Shrimp-Eating Championship. This newest festival tradition will take place on the Sunday of the event, March 15, at 1 p.m. inside the expo grounds at Lynn Hall Park.

The championship will feature up to 10 sponsored contestants who will compete to eat three pounds of cooked and peeled Fort Myers Beach pink shrimp within three minutes. Contestants will be aided by assistants who will dole out the shrimp in pre-weighed portions. Whoever eats the three pounds first or whoever eats the most within the three minutes wins!

Also up for grabs is “People’s Choice. Event Chair Shelby Peters said this award is won by collecting the most $1 donations from the crowd for the contestant. Your voting dollars go directly to our Beach Lions assistance to our neighbors in need of eye surgeries and glasses.

Have you cameras and video recorders going! You won’t believe your eyes. Cheer on your favorite. This championship will likely become a new island tradition. Will the winner be a local shrimp enthusiast with long practiced technique or a newcomer with a something new to bring to the table?

The Lions Club has a few remaining spaces for participants and sponsors. Sponsorships are $200 with all proceeds to Lions Charities. Sponsors and their eating champ will receive promotional inclusion in our publicity, announcements about them and their businesses at the event plus the good will of their donation to all the Lions charitable act ivies. ??Shrimp will be provided by the Fort Myers Beach Shrimping Fleet. Remember to eat pink, our local shrimp are pink! Support our local Shrimping Fleet like our shrimp-eating champions who will be eating local!
