To the editor:

The FMB Spirit of ’45 committee and I wish to express our sincere thanks to everyone who helped make our tribute to our World War II heroes event of Aug. 11 a success.

When we contacted all involved and told them about the significance of this event and asked for their help and participation, they were all excited and eager to help out.

Keeping the memory of our WWII heroes alive and honoring their courage and sacrifice is something we must do. When the event concluded, I was thanked by many WWII veterans for honoring them in this fashion. But it was not me, it was our community who turned out to support, participate and take an active role. Special thanks go to Junkanoo’s managers Neal and Alfredo and staff who stepped up to provide the veterans and their spouses or guests with a delicious dinner.

We thank all of our volunteers, those who donated to our fundraisers, and those who participated in the ceremonial events, including Commissioner Larry Kiker, the emcee; Mayor Alan Mandel; Town Manager Terry Stewart for a great rendition of The Star Spangled Banner; DaZ for their patriotic music; FMB Fire & Rescue (provided the hook & ladder truck to hoist the flag); US Coast Guard Station FMB and Wreaths Across America (Laying of the Wreath); Lee County Sheriffs Department (provided the Helicopter Fly-Over); VFW Post 10097; Veterans Club of America Post #1; and everyone who contributed to make this event possible. With your support and contributions the committee was able to cover the cost of all guests who attended. There are enough funds remaining to start next year’s event and to contribute to the “Wounded Warriors Program,” which is to be held in the spring.

Thank You, Fort Myers Beach!!!
