Roundabout suggestion comes up again

2 min read

To the editor:

In a “Guest Commentary” by Councilman Dan Andre in the Beach Observer on July 31, he called some of us “knuckleheads.

With all due respect, Councilman Dan Andre needs to pay attention to the traffic issue. He may be right by saying the bridge is State owned, and Estero Boulevard is Lee County owned, and thus the City (he calls it a Town?) of Fort Myers beach has no control over “pedestrian walkovers,” or other changes to Estero Boulevard.

The Fort Myers Beach Council can make recommendations to the State or Lee County Commission to make changes, rather then calling some of us “knuckleheads.” I have suggested for many years that a “roundabout” at the foot of the bridge would solve the traffic problems by eliminating the crossing light in Times Square, but nobody hears me.

It’s simple! Come over the bridge to a “roundabout,” turn right to Bowditch Point, or left to Estero Boulevard via Crescent Street. Make the entire area from the foot of the bridge to McDonald’s a pedestrian mall, no need for a crossing light or walk over in Times Square. Traffic coming from the south on Estero Boulevard would have to turn right on Crescent Street to exit the island, or to Bowditch Point.

The Councilman “Dan Andre” owes us an apology for his lack of knowledge on this issue.
