If e-books are a new world and you’d like to learn how to download and read ebooks from our collection, then bring your eReader and participate in the class on Aug. 9.
Survival shows continue to be popular on TV. For an interesting glimpse into the behind the scenes of these shows, join Jaime Huffman, a former contestant on CBS Survivor, as she shares insights into the casting process, filming, challenges and for her, meeting her husband on the show. Scheduled for Aug. 9.
Musing
If you’ve ever wondered just who the “Friends of the Fort Myers Beach Library” are, they are a group of people who support the library in a number of ways. Their dues help financially, as do their other fund-raising activities. Friends’ volunteers staff the Bookstore in the Commons on the third floor and they sponsor the magazine subscription drive as well as sales of their cookbook and gift paks of books. Their efforts provide funding for “extras” such as the mural painting the elevator shaft, special pieces of furniture, etc. If you love your library as the other Friends do, consider joining them to show your appreciation. Membership forms are available at the desk just outside the elevator on the second floor, or you can have a form sent to you by making a request to Beachfriends@comcast.net
Summer Reading Program
It’s a treat having children read and enjoy time in the library. Last Friday’s Summer Reading Program session found the children spending time with folk musician Chip Withrow. He sang a variety of songs which seemed to enable the kids to be in the perfect mood. Chip gave the children an opportunity to strumm the guitar and mandolin. They then made up a song together focusing on a theme that seemed dear to the kids: candy. The refrain of the song ended up as ‘everybody loves hearts and candy.’ The time went so quickly that few children realized how quickly it was time to go. Chip recorded a copy of the song and is making individual copies so that each child will have a CD of the song.
Library Usage
Usage of the library continues to move up. The number of people using the library was up over 50 percent last month, as has been true all year. Those who have a quick route to the Internet at home often don’t realize how many in the community still have no access either regularly or during times when they don’t have access. The figures show it too: the number of people using the Internet was up 26 percent last month and amount of time spent was up dramatically.
Children’s Courtyard
As time marches forward, we are able to complete more and more of the little touches that are planned as part of our overall library. A giant tortoise has been added in the Children’s Courtyard, which can also be viewed by Audio Avenue on the first floor. Children can, within days, add this area to their library experience.
Movies
With construction completed, we will be expanding some services. Among the first will be an afternoon movie at the library. During August, two showings are scheduled. Each will focus on new, award-winning independent and foreign films. Length will vary: e.g. the first one on Aug. 13 is 100 minutes, and the second on Aug. 30 is 83 minutes. Showings will take place in the Community Room.
Sharing
A central purpose of the library is that we are sharing resources and providing access to the quality and depth of insights that have been developed over time and over distance. In support of that mission, we welcome donations of books, DVDs and CDs. Drop a donation in the box in the lobby or in the box near the first floor check-out station or second floor reference desk.
Volunteer
One of our cleaners is gone most of August and if you are able to spend a few hours one day a week in assisting in needed maintenance tasks, please get in touch with me. This need is just for the month of August. The day of week can be entirely what fits in your schedule. While we have paid back-up if needed, it will help a lot if we’re able to continue cleaning via the support and volunteer mode.

A recorder gives the hours we are open if you call in at 765-8162 when we are closed. Open hours are Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
