Compassion goes a long way

To the editor:

I have a story I want to share with you about a patient of ours who went out of her way to help a girl, 21-year-old Jennifer Dawson, who was visiting our Beach recently.

Carol Schmechel, one of our patients, was out one day and saw two girls walking and one girl hopping to our clinic. Carol picked them up, brought them to us, left her number and told us to call her and she would pick them back up and return them to their hotel.

Well, Jennifer definitely needed an x-ray and crutches. Carol actually drove them into Bonita Springs and got them crutches then took them to Radiology Regional Center for x-rays. Come to find out Jennifer had a fracture in her foot. We got her an appointment with a specialist in Fort Myers who got her in within the hour.

Poor Carol had an appointment at 1 p.m. and couldn’t take her. So, she was bringing her back, and Jennifer was going to have to call a cab and take it all the way to Fort Myers by Lee Memorial Hospital. Carol, the sweet person, decided to cancel her appointment to take Jennifer to the specialist.

You don’t see a lot of people like Carol. My gratefulness goes out to Carol for being kind, generous and caring for someone who is alone here with her two friends and no car. They were visiting here on spring break from Elkhart, Indiana.

Kudos to Carol for going out of her way to help someone out of town.
