Crosswalks

2 min read

To the editor:

Another busy season is upon us, and we still haven’t done anything to improve our dangerous crosswalks on Fort Myers Beach.

On Hickory Boulevard in Bonita Springs, the crosswalks light up when someone wants to cross the street. On Old 41 in Bonita, the crosswalk sign lights up in the same way. It works like a charm. Why not here?

I think I read where there were issues over “maintenance” if this same system were used on our Island. As with anything electrical, yes, there could be maintenance issues, but I don’t think they would be of any real consequence. Ask the families of the people maimed or killed on Estero Boulevard if they think “maintenance issues” should be a reason to avert the death or catastrophic injury to a loved one. Our neighbors to the south seemed to have figured out how to protect their citizens; why can’t we?

Anyone who has ever driven on Estero Boulevard knows how easy it would be to not see a pedestrian until it’s too late. Let’s do something NOW. Please talk to your fellow citizens and to Town Council if you feel this is an important issue.
