Redevelopment officials offer clarification to misunderstanding

My name is Robert W. Beasley, project manager for the San Carlos Island Redevelopment along with Joe McHarris Project Planner. There seems to be some misunderstanding about the 850 boat units that has been approved under our Comp Plan by the State of Florida and Lee County.
I would like to correct any misunderstanding the public may have by explaining what the allowed 850 boat units is.
The Development is allowed a total combined (wet in water slips and dry storage slips) 850 Boat units for the project – minus the number of wet and dry storage units we already have existing today of approximately 536 (approx. 226 wet and 310 dry storage in the boat barn).
So, we would be allowed to add in the future approximately 314 more boat units, of which approximately 298 would be in a boat barn on land as dry storage slips and only about 16 would be added in water as additional wet slips, which were permitted a few years ago.
Bottom line: We will keep all existing docks and boat barn and add another boat barn of approximately 298 dry slips and will add in about 16 more wet slips (Matanzas side only) at some time in the future. Please also note that any additional dry or wet boat slips built on the site will require extensive additional permitting from a variety of local, state and federal agencies. Zoning is merely the first step in a very lengthy regulatory process.
We are a very responsible development group. We have already done all traffic and environmental studies required by and approved by the state of Florida and Lee County when they approved our Comprehensive Plan Amendment, and we will continue to meet or beat all standards as this development moves forward.
