Town needs to change committee guidelines
To the editor:
I read the article about appointing Dan Andre to the town council. I believe he is a great choice and will serve the town well. In the same article you mention vacancies exist for the Anchorage Advisory Committee. Some vacancies are chronic and membership is limited to islanders. I have tried for over a year to have the council consider non-islanders who still live within Fort Myers Beach to no avail. I know there are more pressing issues, but there are a lot of capable folks who want to participate, but cannot due this island restriction.
From a common-sense approach it makes sense to expand the membership possibilities especially for committees like the Anchorage Advisory and Maritime Resources Task Force. The reason being as the anchorage and maritime areas are not exclusively Estero Island. Expanding membership would not be unique, as FMB Commissioners do not have to live on the island. I am sure the rationale is that the fire district applies to all of the Beach — I think some committees do too. Let’s change the rules.
