FOLKS need your help
To the editor:
Lovers Key State Park is among the most visited of Florida’s State Parks, hosting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Featured on the Travel Channel’s “Top Ten Florida Beaches,” the park boasts 1,600 acres of pristine, natural habitat. And it’s right in your back yard. FOLKS (The Friends of Lovers Key, Inc.) is a non-profit group established to protect, preserve and support the park. FOLKS is a Citizen Support Organization given special status by Florida law that makes it possible for members to support their favorite state park through fundraising and volunteering. They step in to help the park with purchases that might not be feasible within the regular park budgets. FOLKS members also provide crucial support for special events at the park during the course of the year.
Whether you are a member of FOLKS or not, you could be of service to this great park.
We need your help!! As a member the community, I hope you are interested in continuing improvements to the park, it’s facilities, programs, etc. Fund raising is a major role in that effort. You may have seen our great FOLKS t-shirts. Originally only available in white, this last year we introduced shirts and tanks in a wonderful assortment of colors. We have a small group of volunteers who come out to the park a few hours each month to sell these shirts at the tram station. It has been very successful, but we need MORE volunteers.
Those of you who are heading north soon keep this opportunity in mind for next fall. Those of you who are year-round residents, won’t you consider coming out a couple days a month for a few hours to help us? It’s not hard, or complicated but we will train you. Training is done on Thursdays. So if you feel you could spare some time to help for a few hours, and then stay and enjoy the park, please contact Neeley Murphy – 5m@embarqmail.com or Bob Lindner – lindnerr@msn.com for more information.
If you would like information on becoming a member of FOLKS please contact Cheryl Hohmann at 464-3578 or cherylatfolks@comcast.net.
