Work on the Big Carlos Bridge concerns resident

2 min read

To the editor:

The plan to resume work on the Big Carlos Bridge on March 21 will definitely hurt Fort Myers Beach. Businesses and Residents will be very adversely affected.

With wait times of 20 to 30 minutes many cars were turning around and not bothering to come onto the Island. If I were in business here now I would be outraged. Much revenue from our island amenities must have been lost, particularly from the period from Jan. 15 through Feb. 18. Prior to that time, wait times were usually around 5 minutes.

Work should be suspended till Apr. 25, after Easter. If they require only 2 more weeks to complete the project, as they say, it would be done by May 5 .. well before the rain sets in. As it took 17 weeks with 2 workers, realistically it might require 20 workers to get the job done.

Please help to postpone this project till after season. Contact the mayor or council members at 765-0202 or the DOT at 533-8580. The officials there are Clay Simmons and Ehab Guirguis.

Prime season here is so short and the very real traffic issues on this island do not need to be compounded further at this time in these 3 busy months.
