Why not a better-equipped library?

2 min read

To the editor:

Why are some people so set against the library expansion? Are they so wealthy that they can afford to buy the newest books, DVD’s and CD’s? If they were, maybe they would consider making a donation to the library acquisition’s budget.

Why would they wish to deny those of us that are not as wealthy the use of a new, larger and better-equipped library?

The expansion of the existing Fort Myers Beach Library will be financed with funds that have been privately raised. The expansion will provide more computers for those who need to find information or for those of our winter residents and visitors who just want to check their email. It will provide for a larger selection of books and non-print materials. It will provide areas for community service meetings and programs and a larger section for seniors and a larger one for the children too. It will also provide a larger area for The Friends of the Library, whose book sales help fund library services.

This is still a country of free speech, but so far we have only heard from the shortsighted, non-forward thinking naysayers. How many of us citizens, both full-time and part-time, will allow these few voices to deny us our rights to a library that is on the cutting edge of progress and technology? One that will serve all the people.
