Councilman Babcock decides not to run for re-election
To the editor:
Entering public life for me was a profoundly personal decision. Your hopes and dreams have been my fuel. Over the last few months, I have given it great thought and I have chosen not to run for re-election to Town Council. My reasons will remain personal. I want to thank my wife and family who have supported the choices I have made.
As your Town Council representative and friend, I wish that it were possible to convey my gratitude to you personally. I have been involved in Town issues for more than 10 years. It has been rewarding working on challenging issues. I believe the accomplishments made a difference. It could be years before the impact of some decisions will be known. During my campaign for Town Council I initiated the use of the word “islanders” to refer to the diverse population that makes up our island community. Many “islanders” do not get to vote for their representatives. I worked hard to truly represent the interests of everyone.
It is time for me to contribute in other ways outside of elective office. I intend to pursue other interests although I have not dismissed the possibility of running for public office again in the future. I will miss the support provided by a dedicated and hard working Town staff, but I know they will be there to support me as an islander.
The campaign season is upon us again. Voters and candidates alike will be engaged in a very important civic exercise. With the deepest appreciation I want to thank you for allowing me to represent you and serve our community. I look forward to the next chapter with excitement and gratitude.
