Resident eyes council elections

To the editor:

Now that the election turmoil is past, it is time to think about the next one for Fort Myers Beach. It will be here before we know it.

It seems clear; folks rebelled against career politicians. We want elected officials we know and trust who will impartially consider the issues before deciding the important challenges facing our town.

I think we have such a man here on the beach who fits that criteria and more, if he can be persuaded to run for Town Council . . . Carl Conley.

For ten years Carl published the Beach Sand Paper, writing over 500 editorials concerning the issues we face here in our little piece of paradise. All of us know where he stands and how he thinks. One thing is clear, his opinions have had little to do with political party positions, and there’s no doubt how strongly he feels about the island and our environment.

The personal connections he has made over the years with county officials, our Congressman, our Senator and law enforcement provides us with a great opportunity for more cooperation with the county and state.

His credentials include Chamber of Commerce Chairman and President of the Island Arts Foundation. Recently he was appointed to the Board of the Lee County Alliance of the Arts and serves with the Sheriff on The Advisory Board of the Uncommon Friends Foundation.

Now that he has sold the Sand Paper, he seems to be in a position to serve us on Council without a conflict of interest and lend his knowledge and experience for the benefit of all of us. I hope you lend your support in encouraging Carl to toss his hat into the ring.
