More support for library expansion
To the editor:
I would like to thank the Civic Association for their expression of support of our library. Frankly, I am at a loss to understand the last-hour opposition that has suddenly appeared. Where was this sentiment over the years of public hearings and even more public workshops?
My TRIM notice shows that I am paying about $22 per year for the privilege of enjoying our own local library. I’m happy to pay it and can’t wait to see the completion of this project and what it will add to the cultural life of our town.
Most astonishing is the position of the Town expressed by our mayor in questioning and now investigating an independent taxation district. What’s next, take up the gauntlet and fight Mosquito Control or the Fire Department?
And lastly, I hear the argument that, given the current economy, a project like this is inapproprate. Fiddle faddle. Public works projects are just what are called for in depressed economies. Why not think of our new library as a Fort Myers Beach Hoover Dam?
Somehow I suspect that this surprising and obviously organized move against our cultural center expansion is an attempt to grab the land and money dedicated and morph them into a new Town Hall. I might even agree with that event if I had ever seen any sign of culture in our current government center.
