Historic society thanks volunteers
To the editor:
We would like to welcome the group of friends who graciously signed up as volunteers at the Historic Cottages: Penny Antrim, Annie Babcock, Jinger DeMent, Nancy Hennenberger, Bobbi Kemp and Linda Meeder.
Barbara Keene and others will help these volunteers learn the facts and fascinating stories about very early Florida and about out island when there were no bridges, roads or people -only mosquitoes and a gorgeous untouched beach.
There will be a training workshop in the annex in January on how to make all of this information come to life for the tourists, which they will be guiding through the pictures, treasures, and artifacts that we have displayed at the cottage.
Volunteers make many items for our gift shop as well such as Christmas ornaments as well as creative shell, coconut or other native products. They also help process sea grapes for our famous sea Grape Jelly.
We invite volunteers to observe the presentations for the large number of college classes the FGCU professors bring to the cottage as part of their curriculum. Elementary students also come over for lessons on our local history, and we encourage our volunteers to help with these residents.
As you can see, the Estero Island Historic Society has a wide variety of activities going on, and we would be delighted to have more volunteers in any of these areas. Our greatest need, however, is for more guides, who are fascinated by Florida and want to learn more about the environment and history so that the information can be shared with others,
