A view on a fire commission candidate

2 min read

To the editor:

Regarding the interview with Al Agathen by a recent local weekly newspaper staff reporter, I feel that for all the reasons Mr. Agathen thinks he would make a good candidate for the FMB Fire Commission, he would be our worst possible choice.

If he has three ideas that could save hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars, why did he not present these ideas for consideration when the new budget was being presented? He said he would save them for when (or if) he was elected.

In addition, how can Mr. Agathen say he is 100 percent for no one losing their job or closing of any firehouse -isn’t that rather narrow-minded not knowing what the future holds for Fort Myers Beach?

As the leader of CERT and feeling “right at home” with the Fire Department, wouldn’t this be a conflict of interests? It appears to me that he is a little too buddy-buddy with the firemen and the chief to be able to effectively make impartial decisions regarding spending our tax dollars. His allegiance would go to the firemen because this is what he has been up north and, therefore, would not have an open mind regarding issues that the chief and firemen deem necessary.

This opinion, of course, is only one, but I have to believe there are many others who have this very same feeling!!
