Former lieutenant applauds Charlotte sheriff
To the editor:
I saw where Charlotte County Sheriff William Cameron was with Nicholas Prokos – the 8-year-old boy whose quick thinking saved his mother (“Charlotte County boy, 8, honored for preventing crash,” News-press, June 29). Itimpressed me that Cameron took the time to recognize him. He even made the boy an honorary deputy!!!
I recall a story when I was a boy of about 10-ish. I was playing in my backward when I noticed smoke coming from a neighbor’s kitchen. No one was home. I ran into my house, grabbed an extinguisher, ran to the neighbor’s house and put the fire out. That was circa 1983-84.
The local community made a big deal of it. I was given a special award and invited to a dinner in my honor. It made me feel like I was on top of the world – just as I am sure Bill Cameron did for Nicholas Prokos.
I know what recognition did for me when I was young. It does my heart good to see Nicholas given such a memorable honor, and I am sure he will remember that day for the rest of his life!Thank you Bill Cameron for taking a moment to recognize him!
