To the editor:

As of Wednesday, May 26, three Lee County tourism industry partners had reported a loss of business to the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau.

Florida’s Governor Charlie Crist has announced plans for a $25 million advertising campaign, funded by BP, to promote the Panhandle. Visit Florida as well will start running ads this weekend which are funded by $2.5 million in state emergency money.

According to a news release from the governor’s office: “Governor Crist has directed an extensive national tourism advertising campaign during the next two months to ensure potential travelers have accurate information about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill’s impact on Florida’s beaches and waters. The campaign will include broadcast television and radio, print, online and social marketing, targeting in-state, domestic and international markets. The campaign will also include extensive proactive image generation and distribution of photos and videos of visitors enjoying Florida beaches and attractions.” Here is a link to the release: www.flgov.com/release/11622

The VCB will continue to closely monitor the situation. At this time, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has not impacted The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel, and the Florida Division of Emergency Management does not expect the oil to come ashore in Florida between now and Sunday, May 30. It has not made projections beyond that time frame. Forecasts are still being made in 72 hour increments.
