Stand up and be counted

1 min read

To the editor:

I’m writing on behalf of the 2010 Sunshine Census Initiative to encourage part-time Florida residents to stand up and be counted. By participating in the census, part-time Florida residents can help their community secure the resources it needs for the next 10 years. At peak season, it is estimated that over one million residents live in Florida part-time. Even if residents live in Florida only half of the year or are unsure which home is their primary residence they should be counted from the place where they were on April 1, 2010.

Now a new phase begins to follow up on households that did not mail back a form. Enumerators, or census takers, will be going door-to-door in Florida to households that did not return a 2010 census form. Census workers carry official government badges with their name on it for proper identification and have a “U.S. Census Bureau” bag. A census taker will never ask to enter a home and will only ask the same questions as on the questionnaire.
