Sand sculptor impressed with event

To the organizers and the people of the Town of Fort Myers Beach; you guys really, really, rock! I may be easily impressed, but what has been done with the American Sand Sculpting Championship can’t be overstated. You have taken something that was really quite cool, reshaped and re-invented it and created something amazing.

Hats off to the multitude of people who paid the gate fee in support of both the community and us, the sand sculptors. It wasn’t surprising that so many spectators came, as the event was never lacking in attendance, but it’s proof positive of success in any field when a show becomes worth the price of admission. From the get go I was thanking spectators for coming by. I thank you all again.

Assembling such a strong field of sculptors, most of whom hold world championship titles, was brilliant. It was the new format that brought in many of the new faces. The results on the beach were impressive. It was great marketing to tie it in as a qualifying event for the re-formatted, soon to be held in the US, World Championships of Sand Sculpting. All contest organizers will be taking note of your most successful event.

I am sure that such a large, well-attended event such as this was not without a huge supporting cast whose input and efforts I am not privy to, but from this sand sculptors viewpoint, I was overly impressed by the skills of Katie (and John) Corning and Suzanne Altamare whose first-hand understanding of what makes a contest successful was on full display.

The energy, and work ethic of Andrew Cochrane (and his wife Pat) and his sincerest interest in producing the best possible event was exemplary. His community spirit is unsurpassed anywhere I have been. Also to note was the tremendous work by Al (and his wife, Judy) from Creative Events. He seemed to be everywhere at once.

And most importantly, as is the case at every event we sculptors attend, there can never be enough said about the volunteers. without whom, the whole world would cease to turn! You are a very special group of people. Sincerest thanks to you all.

At the awards ceremony and the commencement dinner, we were thanked for our presence. For me personally, and I have heard it said by all of my colleagues with whom I discussed it, that it was quite an honor to be included. As usual, we were treated wonderfully. We were fed excellent food and the accommodations were first rate. I (we) thank you sincerely from the heart.

The job you guys did not go without notice. You have set a standard!

Congratulations!! My sculpture title was: “Long Distance”

It is a great pleasure and honor to be part of the Fort Myers Beach American Sand Sculpting Sand Sculpting Championship family.
