Resident applauds town’s acquisition of Bay Oak

To the editor:

I would like to congratulate the Fort Myers Beach Town Council on the securing of Bay Oakes for community use.

It is now better and more flexibly run, much more welcoming and, above all, much, much cleaner. The floors shine, the old stale smell is gone and the bathrooms are clean.

When I enrolled for the aerobics class, I found that I now had the choice of booking for a week, two weeks or a month. This means that winter residents, who return during the last week of November can book just one week in November and after that for full months, which of course is cheaper. I am sure that this more use-friendly policy will attract more participants. When Lee County ran the place one could only book for full months.

There is now a very different atmosphere in the place. When an outside door had been left open, one of the ladies in the aerobics class closed it with the comment “the running of the air conditioning is paid for with my tax dollars and they should not be wasted.” Users now care about the place instead of being annoyed by its grubby condition and the inflexible Lee County rules!

I was delighted to hear about the after-school activities for children and the programmes for over 60s. It would have been worth keeping Bay Oakes going just for these, but there is scope for much, much more.

I would urge local clubs and societies and individual residents to use Bay Oakes to its full potential.
