Bring Back Garr Reynolds
To the editor:
Whether you agreed with him or not, you had to respect him. He was a professional, intellectual and his dress code was impeccable.
Last week, I attended my first town board meeting since my summer hiatus north, and I was appalled at dress code, or lack thereof, of our town council. I know we are a tourist community -weekly, monthly and seasonally- but the members of the town council live here. Casual and Fort Myers Beach are almost synonymous. Most restaurants have a dress code here of shirts and shoes. I wonder what would happen if you showed up in BVDs and shirts and shoes.
Nevermind. I know golf courses that wouldn’t let some of the council members on their courses the way they were dressed. I know Tom Babcock owns a suit. He used to wear one when he addressed the council before becoming a member. I don’t think Jack Green owns a suit.
Did anyone notice the school principal? He managed to show enough respect for the meeting to dress professionally.
Research has shown that dress is important to the way a person acts and even thinks. Schools with dress codes including schools with uniforms have found that.
I believe that the town council would gain a bit more respect from the people on Fort Myers Beach if they could at least pretend to be more professional, more intellectual and more respectful of their elected positions. I know people who either agree or disagree with certain views that council members have would at least view our them with respect.
