Reader defends Janke/ attacks Towns actions

To the editor:

I read in a paper today that you guys ousted Scott Janke because his

wife is a porn star. Way to go. I love seeing democracy at work. The article quotes: “We did everything we could not to judge,” Kiker told the paper. “It’s not about him and her. It’s about the town.”

Actually, yes, it is about specifically her. Scott Janke has nothing

to do with his wife’s chosen profession, which is a perfectly legal

job, albeit immoral to some. To consider calling a vote on merits that

I doubt he can control (and anyone who is married or has a woman of

their own knows damn well what I’m talking about) should shame you

all. That you fired him ‘for the good of the town’ sickens me.

Now, I don’t even know Scott personally, and I am hardly qualified to

judge his character and conduct as compared to you. But to take this

action for something his SPOUSE does… a lot of people lambast

government and all the ‘terrible things it does’ and those who take up

public service know it is their duty to prove this wrong to the

people, by utilizing and upholding fine standards of conduct. Has

Scott Janke broken any such rules? He has not.

Now, perhaps his contract allowed you five to get together with a

unanimous vote to fire him legally. I really don’t know, I really

don’t care. But sirs, excuse me if I say the method and reasonings

behind his termination are bull(crap). The sad thing is, your action

DOES reflect on your town; it shows that an elected official can be

removed with no violation or misconduct of their own.

I think what you all did was wrong, and furthermore it adds to the

negativity and distrust of government in your community. I cordially

suggest in the future that when you vote to fire somebody you make

sure they have done something wrong or criminal. From what I’ve read,

I’ve nothing but the strongest for the character of Scott Janke; Mayor

Kiker, in the selfsame article you offer similar claims.

I live on the other side of the continent from Fort Myers Beach. I

doubt I will ever visit your town. But I now have more reason not to.

It is my urging as a private citizen that you rescind this vote and

return Mr. Janke’s job to him. He has done no ill, which is more than

can be said for a great many men.
