Skype-based building inspections come to Cape Coral
Cape Coral residents are now able to have virtual inspections on their seawalls and roofs.
Skype, a video streaming app will be used to present real-time video to inspectors who will verify the proper permits and documents and direct contractors on what they need to see for approval.
Contractors can call and schedule Skype inspections for seawalls, roof sheathing on a re-roof, roof dry-in, in progress inspection (coming soon), and the roof final.
Appointment times are in 15 minute increments, and will be available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This idea had been brewing for a while since City of Cape Coral Building Official Steve Beckman pitched it in an FFP (fair, fast and predictable) stakeholders group meeting recently, and received positive feedback. Neighboring communities have found success with this innovative service, according to Beckman.
Saving time for customers, contractors, and getting inspections done at an efficient rate is the motive behind this service.
“This is something to benefit homeowner’s and contractor’s time. These are time-specific appointments, in-person inspections don’t always work that way, and we cut out the variable of travel time. This is another way for us to better serve any and all customers at no additional cost,” said Beckman.
“Our licensed inspectors can see the work like we normally would, we can walk contractors through the inspection process while they hold the tablet or whatever device they have with the proper software. We can tell them to zoom, or to focus on this or that area. It’s as if we are there, he added.
Access to all permits and documentation will be available in-office, Beckman said.
“In the long run, we will be able to do more inspections in less time. This will really benefit homeowners. People have to take half, or even full days, off to meet with inspectors. Now, we hope this service will minimize the time they have to take from work or out of their day.”
Right now this project is in its infancy, and Beckman, along with Executive Director and CEO of Cape Coral Construction Industry Association Bill Johnson Jr, are working together to make sure this service runs smoothly once off the ground.
“We’re here to work out the bugs and kinks we might find along the way, so once we get a larger volume of requests, we can handle them fluidly. We will create contact points, and build systems in place for a smooth transition over time,” Johnson said.
This will also help contractors keep the process moving on whatever projects they are working on. A Skype inspection will allow them to quickly get approval and begin the next phase of construction, which is much better than having to delay a project waiting for the green light, Johnson added.
These new techniques and advances in technology is something the CCCIA is pleased to see Cape Coral adopt.
“We’re happy to see the city looking outside the norm. This advancement in technology is just another tool in our tool box. Adding this resource allows us to get inspections done in a timely manner and allows us to be efficient in serving the community,” Johnson said.
