Fourteen Lee County schools have received the Florida Department of Education’s Five Star School Award for the 2018-2019 school year.

“The award is bestowed upon schools that are committed to incorporating family and community members into the school environment to enhance student learning,” School District of Lee County officials said in a release issued Wednesday afternoon.

“Having parents actively involved in their children’s school and education is one of the best ways to ensure student success,” said Superintendent Dr. Greg Adkins in the prepared statement. “We also need the community engaged and supportive of our efforts for the District to be a success. These Five Star Schools are some of the best examples of how we do both.”

The Lee County Schools honored for their exemplary community involvement are:

Bayshore Elementary School

Bonita Springs Charter School

Caloosa Middle School

Edison Park Creative & Expressive Arts

School

Franklin Park Elementary School

G. Weaver Hipps Elementary School

Lehigh Acres Middle School

Lehigh Elementary School

North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts

Pelican Elementary School

San Carlos Park Elementary School

Three Oaks Elementary School

Three Oaks Middle School

Villas Elementary School

The Five Star School Award was created by the Commissioner’s Community Involvement Council and is presented annually to those schools that have shown evidence of exemplary community involvement. To earn Five Star School recognition, schools must earn a grade of “C” or above, or school improvement rating of “maintaining or improving” for the year of nomination. Schools must also show documentation that they have achieved 100 percent of the established criteria in the following categories:

– Family Involvement

– Business Partnerships

– Volunteerism

– Student Community Service

– School Advisory Councils

“As an educator, I have witnessed the impact of engaging with stakeholders to support students in our schools,” said Jacob Oliva, Florida Chancellor of Public Schools, in the statement. “The result of these connections is higher academic achievement and more students prepared for the future.”

The 14 schools receiving the Five Star School Award will be recognized by the School Board at its Jan. 28 meeting.
