Child injured in accidental shooting

A 3-year-old was in “guarded” condition Tuesday morning after an accidental shooting in Cape Coral Monday night.

The incident occurred in the 1500 block of Northeast 7th Avenue, according to a Cape Coral Police Department release issued Tuesday morning.

“A 3-year old child was injured as a result of the incident, and was transported as a trauma alert to an area hospital where they are now in ‘guarded condition,'” the release states.

The child “had a gun shot wound to the upper portion” of the chest, according to the police incident report, which states the call came in at 10:22 p.m.

The child was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital.

The investigation was turned over to the CCPD Forensics and the Major Crimes Unit. A victims advocate also responded.

The investigation is ongoing, officials said.
