Blanket donations needed

2 min read

The Lee County Homeless Coalition is requesting donations of new and gently used twin blankets.

With nighttime temperatures dropping to the 40s and 50s this week and next, there is a need for blankets especially when an individual has no home or warm room to stay in. Blankets will be given to outreach workers and homeless provider agencies to distribute to those who are living on the streets or in their cars. Many low-income people don’t have enough money to buy warm blankets — especially those who are without a home. A blanket is no substitute for having a safe place to sleep every night. A blanket can, though, offer warmth when the temperatures drop.

“A blanket can help to protect someone from the elements, it keeps them warm and safe, and gives them a sense of hope knowing that the community cares and that the community is helping them,” said Janet Bartos, executive director of the Lee County Homeless Coalition. “In the next couple of months, we expect temperatures to drop in the evenings and have nights that can become uncomfortably cold. If you are able to donate twin blankets, please call the coalition at 239-322-6600 to schedule a time to drop off.”
