17-year-old shot in Cape Coral
A 17-year- old youth was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital after he was shot in the north Cape Friday morning.
“Due to the injury, he was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital by Life Flight. (helicopter),” a release from the Cape Coral Police Department issued states.
The call to the 500 block of Northwest 18th Avenue came in to the Cape Coral Police Department at 10:45 a.m., resulting in the closure of two schools and the partial closure of two others as detectives and forensic specialists arrived to investigate the shooting, canvass the neighborhood and process the scene.
Police believe it was an isolated incident.
“At this time, we believe that this is a specific, targeted incident,” the release states. “Schools in the area took precautions and went into locked down procedures. There in no threat to the public at this time.”
Mariner High School and Mariner Middle School were locked down until shortly after noon due to the active investigation near the schools. Hector Cafferata and Skyline elementary schools were in partial lockdown due to the same incident,
No other information was immediately available.
“We have heard about suspects and vehicles that may have been involved. Once we can verify this information, it will be released,” officials said.
