Fandom Fest set for Dec. 7

The Lee County Library System will host Fandom Fest, a free celebration of fandoms and geek culture for teens and young adults, from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Fort Myers Regional Library, 2450 First St. in downtown Fort Myers.

Cosplay is encouraged.

The festival is broken down into multiple themed areas that offer a mixture of activities and fandom DIY makerspaces tailored for a teen and young adult audience. Fandom theme areas include:

* Space

* Sword & Sorcery

* Superheroes & Villains

* Asian Culture

* Princesses

Festivalgoers can spend the day making Eye of Sauron pendants and lightsabers, learning origami, playing Quidditch, climbing a rock wall and challenging friends in Minute to Win It style games, among many other free activities. A virtual reality tech hub and gaming by Game Guys will be offered along with character meet-and-greets and photo ops. Fans of Star Wars, Disney, Minions and Marvel will have a chance to meet and take photos with their favorite characters.

Live entertainment will be available throughout the day at the outdoor Cornog Plaza Amphitheater and will include headliners such as nationally touring American rapper and YouTube star MC Lars and American nerdcore rapper Mega Ran. The festival will also feature a cappella group Geekapella and Japanese drumming by Tampa Taiko.

Food will be available for purchase and local gaming and comic book shops will sell merchandise and offer role-playing game tutorials and card trading.

A cosplay fashion show will be held at 2 p.m. Register to participate in the free fashion show at the Info Booth from noon to 1:30 p.m. Middle school, high school and college students are encouraged to strut their stuff on the catwalk or find inspiration in the creations of others.

To ensure everyone’s enjoyment of this event, attendees must observe the following rules:

* No real or realistic weapons are allowed

* Lack of clothing is not a costume; shirt, shoes and bottoms must be worn at all times

* Attendees will abide by the LCLS Patron Code of Conduct

* Fandom Fest representatives, library staff members or security personnel reserve the right to inspect costumes and/or accessories

* Attendees who do not comply with the rules and regulations will be asked to leave the premises.
