Cape man arrested in connection with shots fired near CCPD
A Cape Coral man first reported missing and endangered was arrested early Monday morning after police say he fired a gun toward the Cape Coral Police Headquarters building.
Michael Wagner Jr., 35, of 2507 S.E. 8th Ave. was charged with two counts of shooting or throwing deadly missiles into dwellings, buildings or vehicles and offense against police dogs.
Officers were originally called to the 2500 block of Southeast 8th Ave around 11:15 p.m. Sunday in reference to a man who was threatening self-harm and on foot in the area. A perimeter was set up to find the person, later identified as Wagner.
“Officers were unable to find Wagner at that time, therefore a report was taken listing Wagner as a missing endangered person,” a release from the Cape Coral Police Department issued Monday morning states.
Around 2:50 a.m., a CCPD K-9 officer was training in the parking lot of City Hall and heard a gunshot close by, officials said. The officer saw a white male, later identified as Wagner, “wearing a dark clothing, firing multiple shots with a handgun in the direction of Cape Coral Police Department headquarters. Wagner then ran from officers,” the CCPD reports.
While Wagner was running from officers in the area , he was seen crossing Country Club Boulevard near Southeast 9th Court, officials said. LCSO Aviation and a Lee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 were in the area helping search for Wagner and aviation was able to locate him behind a house in the 1000 block of Southeast 11th Terrace, where he was taken into custody.
“During the apprehension he struck the police canine,” the release states, adding the firearm Wagner is alleged to have had was found a short distance away and taken as evidence.
A Public Works vehicle was later found with multiple bullet holes in the driver side door and window. The Public Works vehicle was parked in the area Wagner reportedly ran from officers, officials said.
