Pine Island Playhouse to present ‘The Bully Plays’
The Pine Island Playhouse Student Series will feature a performance of a collection of four short plays about bullying called “The Bully Plays.”
The performances will be at Pine Island United Methodist Church on Pine Island this Friday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m.
Because of the growing epidemic of bullying, and the all-too-often tragic results, the plays were commissioned to educate young people. The plays are touching, imaginative, powerful, uplifting and funny.
This collection of short plays are expected to challenge, inspire and enlighten audiences and help individuals confront bullying in a constructive and creative way.
“Pine Island Playhouse started the Student Series in 2016 when Angela Kerr directed the play, ‘Eat: It’s not about Food,'” artistic director Nichole Pichon said. “The play Angela directed dramatizes the dangerous world of eating disorders in girls and boys. Angela applied for a grant through Disney Friends for Change and received a $500 grant to produce the production and start the Student Series at the Playhouse.”
Each performance will include four one-act plays. Scheduled to be performed are: “Her,” written by Geraldine Ann Snyder and directed by freshman Nick Hubert; “Send,” written by Linda Daughterty and directed by junior Lilly Overbaugh; “A Bunch of Clowns,” written by Sandra Fenichel Asher and directed by freshman Richard Overbaugh; and “The New Kid,” written by Richard Dresser and directed by freshman Erik Daniels.
“This is a great collection to bring your pre-teens and teens to,” Pichon said, “it’s a great way to start conversations at home to help put a stop to bullying in our community.”
The performances are free to the public.
Donations will be accepted.
The performances are produced by special arrangement with the Dramatic Publishing Company.
