Congressman Rooney invites federal and state stakeholders to Roundtable Discussion on water issues

2 min read

Congressman Francis Rooney has invited the directors and administrators of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Oceanography and Atmospheric Administration, and the Environmental Protection Agency to join him in a roundtable discussion on the damaging impact of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). He also welcomed the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Division of Emergency Management and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity to join the discussions with the Federal Agencies.

“Over the last two years Southwest Florida has been faced with overwhelming natural disasters. Last year, large spring and summer rainfall, and a tropical depression generated massive discharges from Lake Okeechobee causing HABs throughout our local waterways,” Rooney said in a prepared statement. “As water is the lifeblood of our community, this event crippled our local economy, generated property damage, triggered major health concerns and inflicted serious environmental destruction. We must make sure the Federal Government is as prepared for future outbreaks as they are with other natural disasters.

“I look forward to working with these key stakeholders on solutions and recovery procedures for our community.”

Location, date and time will be announced when the meeting is finalized. Southwest Florida community leaders and officials will also be invited.
