Heavy rains, flooding problems continue

2 min read

The Cape Coral Police Department issued a notice this afternoon indicatinging that flooding in Cape Coral has forced a detour along Burnt Store Road in northwest Cape Coral. Runoff from the Yucca Pens has made the road impassable, police say. The CCPD reports that traffic is now being directed to Old Burnt Store Road via Gulfstream Parkway and Durden Parkway. The road is expected to be closed for 24 to possibly 48 hours.

The notice indicates that the CCPD and Cape Coral Fire Department report no significant life-safety threats or property damage in the city. Surface street flooding is still widespread and numerous potholes have been reported.

Residents and visitors are still being asked to not drive if they don’t have to.

The capecops.com website also states, if you must drive, allow for extra time and expect delays. General warnings issued Saturday, the site states, still apply:

— “Residents are urged to avoid contact with the water. Flood waters can contain bacteria, parasites, stinging and biting insects, venomous reptiles, and toxic chemicals.”

— “Barricades have been deployed at some of the most flooded areas. Do not drive around these barricades.”

The National Weather Service reportedly still forecasts 5 to 6 more inches of rain for the city through Monday afternoon.

The CCPD reports that the following major intersections in Cape Coral are closed:

— Chiquita Boulevard/Trafalgar Parkway

— Burnt Store Road/Kismet Parkway

— Burnt Store Road/Durden Parkway

In addition to the flooded roadway problems, several areas of the city are under boil water notices. A map on the city’s website (www.capecoral.net) indicates the areas where the boil water notices are in effect. To see the map, sign on to the city website and on the Home page, click on “I Want To” on the main menu bar and then click “Check Status” and then “Boil Water Notices.”
