Bicyclist injured in crash released from hospital
A Cape Coral bicyclist was released from the hospital following a crash earlier this month.
As of Thursday, Richard Kai Rex, 80, of 4937 Victoria Drive, had been discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken after the accident at Southeast 47th Terrace and Vincennes Boulevard.
On June 8, Rex was riding a bicycle northbound on the sidewalk on Vincennes, approaching the intersection at 47th Terrace, according to the Cape police. He came to a stop on the southwest corner of the intersection and checked that motorists traveling east and west on 47th Terrace were stopping.
At 7:13 a.m., Rex began to ride the bicycle north across 47th Terrace, to the right of the marked crosswalk, when a Ford Windstar proceeded into the intersection. Police reported that the Ford had been traveling westbound on 47th Terrace and stopped at the intersection before moving forward.
The front of the Ford collided into the right side of the bicycle, according to police. As a result, Rex was propelled over the hood and down the right side of the vehicle, coming to rest on the roadway.
Rex sustained possible life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Police reported that the driver of the Ford, Christine Catherine Ragonese, 85, of 1809 S.W. 45th Lane, was not injured, nor was the passenger in her vehicle, Patsy Vito Ragonese, 64, of the same address.
Alcohol is not a factor in the crash, according to police.
