Two rescued by Coast Guard after plane goes down
YANKEETOWN, Fla. – The Coast Guard rescued two people Wednesday after their plane crashed in the water near Yankeetown.
Rescued were a 19-year-old male from Longwood, who piloted the plane, and an 18-year-old female from Cape Coral.
Watch standers at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received notification at 8:48 p.m. from Levy County dispatch stating a single-engine plane carrying two people had crashed near the end of County Road 40 Boat Ramp. The Federal Aviation Administration reported the plane was experiencing engine problems before it crashed.
A 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water boat crew from Coast Guard Station Yankeetown was launched and arrived on scene at 9:21 p.m. The boat crew reported two people were on top of the plane in approximately 2 feet of water. The boat crew rescued the two people and transported them to Coast Guard Station Yankeetown where EMS was waiting.
No injuries were reported.
The two people were headed to the Orlando Sanford International Airport from Cedar Key when they crashed. The FAA is lead on the investigation.
