Island Coast High’s college fair tonight
Island Coast High School will hold a college fair from 6-7:30 p.m. tonight at the school.
There will be between 70 and 80 colleges, universities and technical schools represented as well as recruiters from all branches of the U.S. military.
High school students from across Lee County are welcome to attend the free event. Some scholarships will be available and, if seniors bring their transcripts and ACT scores, some schools will be able to accept on the spot.
Island Coast’s College and Career night helps students “shed light” on their future, said Nancy Hagy, College Fair coordinator for Island Coast.
She urges students, no matter their education or career goal, to grasp the opportunity to see what’s out there.
“I tell my students, ‘Your life is now! Seize it and make it amazing! Experience something new!'” she said in a prepared statement. “Soon you will be off to great places so remember today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!”
The spring fair will run the gamut from major universities from across the country to smaller colleges, from art schools to technical and career-oriented institutions, she said.
“We have large colleges like the University of Florida or Michigan State, and we have small colleges like Beacon College, which is only for students with learning disabilities,” Hagy said. “We just have so many different types.”
Among the “majors” will be the University of Alabama, University of Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan State; all but one of the Division I and II school from across Florida; and schools that top national “best schools for minority students” lists, including Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman
Also represented will be numerous “niche” colleges and technical and career schools
She used Beacon College, a small private school in Leesburg, as one example.
“It’s the first accredited institution of higher learning toward a college degree exclusively to students with dyslexia, ADHD or other specific learning disabilities,” Hagy said.
Another would be LIM College.
“LIM College is a private undergraduate and graduate college focused on the business of fashion in midtown Manhattan,” she said.
Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota also is expected to take part.
“We literally have something for everything, even for kids that don’t want to go to college,” Hagy said.
There will be numerous door prizes, including college “goodie bags” and restaurant gift cards.
Last year, the fair was attended by approximately 2,000 students.
Organizers are hoping to attract a similar crowd, if not larger.
The school is at 2125 De Navarra Parkway, Cape Coral.
